During the Battle of Midway, Richard Fleming’s squadron commander Lofton Henderson was shot down, and Fleming took command of the unit. The next day, he led the second division of his squadron in a mass dive-bombing assault on the Japanese cruiser, Mikuma. During the attack, he was killed when his aircraft was hit and crashed to the sea in flames.
On September 18, 1943, U.S. Navy ship USS Fleming, DE-32 was commissioned, in honor of Captain Fleming.
